A PLACE TO SLOW DOWN. A ROOM TO SETTLE INTO.
Choose the setting. Plan the room.
A cabin near a lake, river or mountain trail can suggest a different daily routine. Use that routine to decide what the furniture must do, rather than buying a lodge look before you have a floor plan.

Turn the outing into a useful indoor plan.
For a water-oriented stay, start with the arrival: where do wet shoes and outing gear stop before guests reach upholstered seats? Storage by the entrance and an unobstructed route may be more useful than another decorative table. Indoor wood furniture still needs suitable indoor conditions; a lakeside location does not establish outdoor suitability.
In a view room, check the seated outlook as well as the photograph from the doorway. Sketch the window wall, fireplace and route to the porch. Choose conversation seating that lets people face each other without filling the glass with high furniture. A rocker or glider needs room for movement beyond its stationary footprint.
For a cabin used by a group, work out meals before filling the living room. Tape the table and occupied-chair layout on the floor, then test the walk to the kitchen. An extension table needs a second, extended room plan. A quieter two-person retreat may benefit more from two complete reading positions with light and a useful surface than a large matching suite.
